After consultation with a dietician, Manthan’s suggestions are
as follows:
- Kindly send only vegetarian snacks and lunch to the school.
- Snacks can be biscuits, idli, bread sandwich, and fruits depending on the health condition and morning food intake of the child before coming to school.
- Lunch can be Curd rice/ Sambar rice with lots of vegetables (all types) as
a side dish for children who are accustomed to eating on their own without messing up. But for other children, the suggestion will be Chapattis with lots of vegetables as
a side dish. For all children fruits can be added in the
lunch menu, if not included in the snacks menu.
- Avoid junk food and soft drinks. They cause obesity, stomach disorders, and heart problem over a period of time. We suggest you go through
The Hindu, June 22, 2003, Sunday issue, and various
court cases pending in the USA due to these types of
food.
- Avoid dry, hard, soaky foods such as bread toasts etc.
- Due to acute water shortage and water borne diseases,
Manthan suggests that parents send sufficient quantity of water with your child.
- Please send snacks and lunch at the same time – in the morning - to avoid multiple contacts with the child during the day.
- Do not feed children. Allow them to eat on their own.
- Please do not send spoons along with the snacks and lunch. Children do not wash them properly and this leads to some lunch boxes inviting insects and ants. Some parents think that
Manthan does not take steps to prevent ants entering the
bags. Manthan provides spoons. Some of the school spoons might have come with the lunch boxes inadvertently. They will bear the marking M or MV. If so, kindly send them back to us with a letter.
- Manthan requests parents to send snacks and lunch box in plastic baskets so that they can be washed everyday at
home to maintain hygienic standards. Some of the water bottles are not washed near the cap portion. Kindly take care of these issues. Young children are susceptible to infection due to all these reasons.
